Principal’s Update

Dear Winthrop Families:

Thank you to all who joined us last week at our Fall Gathering. The weather cooperated and it was a wonderful event for Kindergarten and new families to the Winthrop. I’d also like to thank Cal Finocchiaro and all the volunteers for making it such a terrific night for the Winthrop community.

At last month’s Open House, I discussed our Winthrop Site-Council. Every public school in Massachusetts is required to have a school site council. The school council is an advisory group of teachers, administrators, parents and community members whose primary responsibility is to develop the school improvement plan. The Winthrop’s Accelerated Improvement Plan was developed by last year’s School Council and is posted on the Winthrop School’s website.

Our current School Council members are listed below. We are in need of two parent representatives. The Council meets in the afternoon from 2:40-3:40 p.m. approximately five times a year. If you are interested in participating on the Winthrop School Council, please contact Principal John Maynard by email by Tuesday, October 10th. If we have more than two volunteers for the parent representative open positions, we will have an election by paper/pencil secret ballot by those in attendance at our PTO meeting on Thursday, October 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the APR.

John Maynard, Principal/Chair

Sue Herook, Teacher Representative

Jennifer Mazzei, Teacher Representative

Now that we’ve had a couple full weeks of school to get to know our schedules and establish our routines, it’s time to turn our attention to our Elementary Student Handbook. You can find an electronic copy on our website. review our handbook with your child. In addition, this past spring the School Committee approved new district homework policies for the elementary grades, K-5. These expectations can be found on page 33. Once you’ve reviewed the handbook with your child, please go to the link below for instructions on Aspen to update contact information, media release and that you have read the Student Handbook.

Our instrumental music lessons for grades 3-5 have started. You should have received an e-mail from music teacher Mr. Repucci regarding your child’s lesson. Music lessons for Winthrop will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Larissa Winters, our new adjustment counselor, and I will be hosting a Coffee Morning Tuesday, October 10th. This is an opportunity to learn more about our REACH core values and PBIS system as well as ways Ms. Winters supports our students at the Winthrop. Please join us in the APR starting at 8:20 a.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Finally, check out our REACH Stars for the week of September 25th. Our students earn their REACH Stars for demonstrating one of our core values: respect, effort, achieve cooperation and honesty. The students’ names our announced during our Friday morning announcements.

Have a great week.
