Principal’s Update

Dear Winthrop Families:

I hope everyone had a restful long holiday weekend. Please join us this Thursday, the 16th, for PJ Night from 5:30-7:00 the APR as part of our annual PTO Book Fair. We’ll have guest readers and you and your child can do a little extra book shopping.

Melrose Education Foundation and the Melrose Public Schools are hosting the third annual Parent University this Saturday, November 18th from 8:30 am – 12:30pm at MHS. The event is FREE, but registration is required. To register and to learn about the workshops offered:

There are a few workshops that might be of special interest to you. For fifth-grade families, so close to moving on to the next step, you may have questions about the middle and high schools, and what kinds of opportunities exist for your child. Two sessions at Parent U can help answer these questions:

Project IMPACT: did you know that 7th and 8th graders at the middle school have the opportunity to take part in trainings from the ADL and MAAV and become peer educators on topics such as bullying, racism and other social justice concerns? These students present to their classmates, so even if you don’t think your child would want to be a peer leader, you might like to hear what your child will be learning. The workshop will be presented by eighth-grade peer leaders.

MPS – A Student Perspective: a panel of current MHS students will be discussing their experience in the Melrose schools. It’s a great chance to hear from the students what they thought of their education, and ask what it is really like to attend schools in Melrose. It’s a wonderful opportunity to ask questions about the middle and high schools!

A reminder, please save the date! Our annual Winter Concert is around the corner. Students, K-5, will present their choral concert on Friday, December 15 in the APR. We will once again split our parent audience to accommodate all in the APR. Families with last names starting with the letters A-L should attend our 8:30 show. Families with last names starting with a letter M-Z should attend our 10:00 a.m. show.

Also, for our fifth-grade families, the MVMMS administration, staff and students welcome families of current 5th-grade students to come and learn about Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School and tour the building on Thursday, December 7th, 2017, at 6:30 PM. The information session will begin in the auditorium with tours of the building to follow. Both students and parents/guardians are welcome to attend.

I am very pleased to announce Crystal Olwert and Jessica Orlowski as our newest paraprofessionals. Crystal will be working in our first and second-grade classrooms. Jessica will be in our kindergarten classrooms. Please welcome them to the Winthrop.

Finally, check out our REACH Stars for the week of November 6th. Our students earn their REACH Stars for demonstrating one of our core values: respect, effort, achieve cooperation and honesty. The students’ names are announced during our Friday morning announcements.

Have a great week.
