Principal’s Update

Dear Winthrop Families:

I want to wish you a safe and restful Thanksgiving holiday. Thank you to the PTO for once again organizing our annual Thanksgiving Gift Baskets for Winthrop families in need. This is an important lesson for all of us during this time of year to remember to reach out to help others. I know our Winthrop families appreciate the support of the community. Please consider giving to the Giving Tree for the December holidays.

We had a great turnout at last Thursday’s PJ Night at the Book Fair. Willy the Wildcat made an appearance and the students had a great time. I’d like to thank Amanda Frederick and all the PTO volunteers for the Book Fair and organizing a new tradition with PJ Night at the Winthrop.

We’re right in the middle of our fall parent conference window. If you have not scheduled a parent conference, please contact your child’s classroom teacher to do so. Our specialists are also available if you need to meet. Please see their availability below and email them directly to schedule a time for a conference.

Take a look at this month’s Melrose Curriculum Newsletter. This one focuses on math and specific strategies to support your child at home and in the classroom.

A reminder, please save the date! Our annual Winter Concert is around the corner. Students, K-5, will present their choral concert on Friday, December 15 in the APR. We will once again split our parent audience to accommodate all in the APR. Families with last names starting with the letters A-L should attend our 8:30 show. Families with last names starting with a letter M-Z should attend our 10:00 a.m. show.

Also, for our fifth-grade families, the MVMMS administration, staff and students welcome families of current fifth-grade students to come and learn about the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School and tour the building on Thursday, December 7th, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. The information session will begin in the auditorium with tours of the building to follow. Both students and parents/guardians are welcome to attend.

Finally, check out our REACH Stars for the week of November 13th. Our students earn their REACH Stars for demonstrating one of our core values: respect, effort, achieve cooperation and honesty. The students’ names are announced during our Friday morning announcements.

Happy Thanksgiving!

John Maynard, Principal
