Principal’s Update

Dear Winthrop Families:

Happy New Year! I hope you had a fun and restful vacation, despite the extreme cold. A reminder, next week is our first early-release day of the new year on Wednesday, January 10th. Once again, students will be dismissed at 12:22 p.m.

I’d like to thank the PTO and all the volunteers who organized our annual Giving Tree last month. As a community we were able to support over fifteen families during the holiday season. Participating families always express their gratitude and appreciation for the gifts and the difference the support makes for their families during the holidays.

It’s hard to believe but the MCAS testing window is approaching. Testing is for students in grades 3-5. The ELA testing window: April 2-May 4th, 2018. The math testing window: April 3-May 25th. 2018. Science and technology testing window (5th Grade Only): April 4th-May 25th.

Congratulations again to Ms. McEntee and our students for a terrific performance at our annual Winter Concert last month. It was a great way to bring in the holiday spirit and showcase our Winthrop students’ talent. Also, check out our MEF Schoolhouse Rock Stars. Congratulations, Ms. Mazzei, Mrs. Malaguti, Mrs. Constantine, Ms. Wilcox, and Mrs. Orlofski!

If you are on Twitter, please follow me at my new username John Maynard @WinthropMPS. I hope to highlight the great things happening in our Winthrop classrooms and within the Melrose community in the coming months. It’s also a great way to connect with the Melrose School community in general.

Finally, check out our REACH Stars for the week of December 18th. Students earn our REACH Stars for demonstrating one of our REACH core values: Respect, Effort, Achieve, Cooperation and Honesty. Our next REACH Assembly is Thursday, the 11th. We’ll be recognizing our students for our core value achieve. Our kindergarten and first-grade teams will be hosting.
