Dear Winthrop Families:
I hope you had a restful long weekend with family and friends and enjoyed our late summer weather on Labor Day. We had a great start to the year last week. It’s been great to see the students back in the building with smiles on their faces and excited to see old friends and make new ones.
Over the next two weeks, we’ll focus as a community on our core values respect, effort, achieve, cooperation and honesty (REACH). Teachers, K-5, are leading our students in activities focused on setting expectations throughout the school: classroom, playground, hallway and APR.
I’d also like to introduce our newest staff members to the Winthrop community. I am very pleased to welcome Elizabeth Strasser as our new third-grade teacher. Ms. Strasser most recently taught fifth-grade at the St. Stephen’s Elementary School in Watertown. She earned her B.A. from the University of New Hampshire and her master’s from Lesley University.
Kathleen Pinette joins us as our third-grade special education teacher. Last year, Ms. Pinette completed a graduate fellowship at the Lynnfield Middle School. Ms. Pinette earned her B.A. and master’s in special education from Merrimack College. I’d also like to welcome Bobbi Wortman as our newest addition to our K team. For the past two years, Bobbi has been a kindergarten paraprofessional and is now a regular classroom K teacher. Finally, I’d like to welcome back Larissa Winters as our new guidance counselor. Ms. Winters covered Alexandra Ramos’ maternity leave during the 2015-16 school year.
We have several community events this month. Thursday, September 14th, is our annual Open House. This is an opportunity to learn more about your child’s grade-level curricula and classroom expectations. The Open House schedule is grades K-2 classrooms, 6:30-7:30 p.m., and grades 3-5 classrooms, 7:30-8:30 p.m. Our specialists, PE, music and art will be available to meet with parents from 7-8:00 p.m. We’ll start both sessions in the all-purpose room (APR). Please use the Ashcroft Street entrance to the all-purpose room to enter the building.
Tuesday, September 12th, is Picture Day. You will receive ordering information in your child’s backpack this week. We are using a new vendor, Coffee Pond, and you will receive ordering materials from Coffee Pond this week.
Finally, the PTO is a great way to find out how you can become involved at the Winthrop. There are many volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Look for a date soon for our annual Kindergarten Luau. All Kindergarten families are welcome to the Luau as well as any new families to the Winthrop Community. This is a great way to meet other new Kindergarten families to the community. Hope to see you at this wonderful Winthrop tradition!
Have a great week!
