Dear Winthrop Families:

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. A reminder, there is no school on Good Friday, April 14th. Thursday, April 13th, will be regular day with a normal schedule. Students will be dismissed at 2:22 p.m. for April vacation and classes resume on Monday, April 24th.

I am very pleased to announce Christine Palermo will be replacing Marc Turiano as our health teacher for the remainder of the school year. Ms. Palermo will be teaching health on Monday and Tuesdays at the Winthrop and at the Roosevelt School on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Most recently, Ms. Palermo worked as a paraprofessional in the Revere Public Schools. She starts next Monday, April 10th. Please welcome her to Melrose.

Our fifth-graders start the MCAS season this year with the ELA sessions starting on Tuesday, April 4th. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest, eats a good breakfast and arrives on time to school for testing. Testing will begin right away at 8:30 a.m. Please see the link below for your child’s specific testing dates.

Check out March’s Parent Connection Newsletter posted on our website. This month’s issue focuses on social and emotional learning, specifically self-management. Through our core values, REACH, our staff and students have focused this year on student learning goals and strategies for self-regulation in the classroom and out of school.

Report cards for students in grades 1-5 will be sent home tomorrow, Wednesday, April 5th. If you haven’t done so already, please make sure you schedule your child’s parent conference in the coming weeks.

Finally, check out our most recent REACH Stars. We announce our REACH Stars every Friday during our morning announcements. Our students earn their Stars for exemplifying one of our core values: respect, effort, achieve, cooperation and honesty.

Have a great week.

Best, John Maynard, Principal
